Comments for Anything Goes should be posted here.  Below is a link to a website where you can listen to the album.  It links to the 1987 Lincoln Center revival that starred Patti LuPone.  The most recent revival starring Sutton Foster is also available for purchase and download from iTunes.

  1. The linked website didn't let me play full songs so I found the 2011 revival on Youtube. I didn't like this musical as much as the others I've listened to. It sounds like something to watch when one wants to escape from the world for awhile and not worry about the show commenting back on your life. I was surprised to recognize "Anything Goes" from Fallout 3, never thought about a cross with video games and musicals. There are many characters and side stories to keep track of that I was following along the song chart from each production to figure out how things changed and who all these people were, that this is probably one that is better watched. There wasn't a lot of variation in the sound of the songs to me, and I think it's good he had one idea and stuck with it, but sometimes it would be repetitive and I would lose interest. I'm sure it could be fun to perform though since you can go big with it because it's not exactly realistic for these events to occur this way and the audience could get swept away in a story like this since it ends happily the way they want it to.

  2. I was fortunate enough to see the 2011 revival of this with Sutton Foster and Joel Grey. UGH. Brilliance. Cole Porter is truly one of the cleverest writers I've ever heard. And Sutton Foster as Reno was amazing. She is definitely a star--I mean, she's won 3 Tonys?! Blow, Gabriel, Blow is Wonderful, You're The Top, It's De-Lovely(!). Cole Porter is wonderful. Truly truly wonderful. And this is, in my opinion, his finest example.

  3. The first one called Prelude which sounds funny i think, and I want to row on the crew which the actor's voice sounds like they are talking about a story. It sounds like easy to sing, but actually the actor need to have a professional skill to control the voice changes. the accompany for The gypsy in me which I really enjoy, I guess it is by piano maybe. The one I like is there is no cure like travel. It is passionate ,it 's almost like that song was made for Laura. and her voice is beyond amazing. these songs are flawless.

  5. Elizabeth, I agree with your analysis. This musical is pure escapism, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. "Anything Goes" came out during the great depression era, and during this time many musicals were written with the intent of simply providing entertainment. There was no overarching goal to make a statement, or revolutionize the medium. Shows were written with the purpose of providing a break from American's economic hardships. Ultimately, "Anything Goes" is simply a cute show, that celebrates musical theatre.

  6. While listening to "Anything Goes" I realized that I have heard a lot of the songs from the score before and not realize that they were part of a show. The score had me feeling like I was going away and finding myself. I don't know if that is right or not to feel this way but that's how I felt. Patti LuPone was my favorite singer from the album. Any song she was in drew me in closer to it. My favorite song was D'lovely for its subtle tone and playful lyrics.

  7. I believe that I have seen this show at starlight theatre in Kansas City when I was growing up. I did enjoy this music I thought Cole Porter did an amazing job. Friendship really stuck out to me for one it is a very catchy tune. I also feel like I have heard before outside of possible seeing the show I believe I heard people seeing it or heard it in different T.V. Shows.

  8. I have never seen this musical before so listening to this soundtrack was interesting. I really enjoyed "You're the top" because of the clever lyrics as well as the melody itself. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out the "Anything Goes" was in Fallout 3, which was actually one of my favorite songs from the show. I think this would be a fun show to be able to put on.

  9. I can see how this musical is easy to love (haha, I'm so clever)...but as someone who is not a hardcore musical buff, I don't think it would be my first choice to see live. The music is fun, the story is cute and I'm sure with the right cast, it is a blast. I just like a little more substance or drama in musicals.

Also...I didn't know the song "Friendship" was from this show. Now I just think of Samaria and Ryan when I hear it!

  10. Maybe it is my bias for my high school, but I think this musical is a lot of fun. They did this musical my sophomore year of college and did phenomenal, I agree that this show is an escape, but at the time a lot of those kids needed it. At that time, one of the shows leads had just lost her boyfriend in a car crash, and many of the other cast mates were close with him as well, so to see them rally and help the audience escape at that time too was awesome. I think "Friendship" and "You're the Top" are my favorites because of how fun and funny they are!

  11. I LOVED IT. So glad I watched it. The characters have such a voice with the music with the strange beats and almost dissonance in the notes they sing, I really noticed it in There's no cure like travel. Easy to Love cuts like a knife in the sweetest way possible, then I Want to Row on the Crew comes on and it snaps back into the reality sailors and their rough and toughness.

  12. My favorite music score is a " Anything goes." I saw this musical in the class for the first time. I really enjoyed watching tap-dance which comprised the great majority of the song. The other music numbers are also funny and cheerful. One of the music genre, Jazz, matches with a title, "Anything goes" nicely. In the genre as a Jazz, every instrumental is played freely. And, I believe it represented freedom.
